We are here to serve the community, utilizing the resources produced by the community, so it stays within the community.
They say a journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. That couldn’t be more accurate in portraying how The Eritrean Community Services San Diego (ECSSD) began. Nearly four decades ago, a group of resilient Eritreans migrated from Eritrea, located at the Horn of Africa, to the United States to begin a new chapter in life. Unfamiliar with the lay of the land, they formed a community to support, encourage, and uplift each other as they began integrating into society. That is how ECSSD was formed and now serves as a non-profit organization still practicing those same principles. Whether you are new to San Diego, or new to America, this community center’s sole purpose is to be a central hub aimed to serve locals in embracing our culture, enthusiastic towards community engagement, and compassionate in advocating awareness in equality of life and civic duties.
In 1985, ECSSD embarked on a transformative journey with the goal of making a meaningful impact within the Eritrean community and beyond. Founded under visionary leadership, ECSSD has continuously strived to uplift and support individuals and families. In 2004, Meb Kifleghi became an Olympic medalist, demonstrating strength and resilience. Our commitment to serving the community was formally acknowledged when San Diego County issued a proclamation in our honor in 2016, recognizing our tireless dedication. In 2022, the 49th district further honored us with a proclamation, solidifying our position as a crucial driver of positive change. Our history reflects the power of community and the enduring impact we can collectively create.
ECSSD is excited to see where we're heading. As we continue to water the seeds planted, we have some exciting new avenues in how to best serve the community. Wisdom obtained from successes of the past; this team is determined to elevate the Eritrean footprint in San Diego. Follow us on social media and attend our events to learn more.
